SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER
Welcome to the Social Anxiety Therapy website. We specialise in providing therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)for sufferers like you, particularly if you are within travelling distance of Ealing, Twickenham, West London and Chesham/Buckinghamshire.
Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, low self esteem, low self confidence and inferiority.
Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression.
If a person usually becomes anxious in social situations, but seems fine when they are alone, then "social anxiety" may be the problem.
Social anxiety disorder (formerly termed "social phobia") is a much more common problem than past estimates have led us to believe. Millions of people all over the world suffer from this devastating and traumatic problem every day, either from a specific social anxiety or from a more generalized social anxiety. It is estimated that at any one time 7-8% of the population of the UK are suffering and that there is a one in eight chance of a person suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder during their lifetime.
We have been running successful Social Anxiety Therapy groups for over 8 years. The groups are run solely for sufferers of Social Anxiety as this has been proven to be the best method.
'Conquering Social Anxiety - A Structured CBT Course' is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach as, again, this has been shown to be most effective. It is based largely on the work of Dr Thomas Richards of The Social Anxiety Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, Professor Ron Rapee of Maquarie University in Sidney, Australia, Gillian Butler and Professor David Clark. The full course covers 15 sessions and these are split into cognitive and behavioural activities. There is also an optional 5 week S.A. Life Skills course which follows on from the main course.
Individuals will be accepted for group therapy only after their suitability is established at a one-to-one session, normally held in Twickenham or Chesham. Group sessions are currently held on Monday evenings in the Twickenham Therapy Centre; a Wednesday evening group is being set up in Chesham and additional daytime groups may be organised in Twickenham or Chesham if there is sufficient demand.

The next refresher session will be a daytime event, held on Saturday 14th April from 11am to 3.30 pm. The event is structured to give you a "top-up" and a chance to meet other SA people and to listen to feedback. So, to Refresh, Rejuvenate and Reinforce your strategies, come along! (a light lunch and refreshments are included) It will, as usual, be extremely helpful for S.A. sufferers but will also be fun; don't miss out!!
The day will also involve a second facilitator and will start with various cognitive strategies for future use. You will then have the opportunity to practise Conversations, Mingling and Small Talk followed by behaviourals. We will also have a presentation on relaxation mindfulness.
Please think about any current issues that you may have so that we can discuss how to handle them within the group. I will be available, by prior arrangement, to discuss matters with you on an individual basis before or after the main session if required. Contact pr@peterralph.com to reserve your place.
